The Alice’s Restaurant Loop Tour Near San Francisco

First Stop: Alice’s Restaurant

The Alice’s Restaurant Loop Tour begins with a stop at the infamous biker hangout tucked into the redwoods along Skyline Boulevard (17288 Skyline Boulevard, Woodside, CA). 

Bikers and regular patrons hail this “great California roadhouse” as an all-American treasure. The restaurant has good food, great prices, and an unparalleled ambiance. The local wine selection also gets rave reviews, and the prices are fair and reasonable. Best of all, Alice’s serves all three meals, including a hearty breakfast (we recommend the Ducati, which features two eggs, two slices of French toast, and two slices of applewood bacon) for those wishing to hit the road before the sun comes up. Depending on the time of day, you may also get treated to live music! 

But be warned: the restaurant fills up quickly on the weekends, and they don’t accept reservations, so you may be waiting around for a few hours, depending on the time of day. (This isn’t much of a problem for weekday warriors, though.)

Off to the Skyline

From Alice’s, the adventure begins. Heading south along Skyline Boulevard, you’re greeted by sweeping curves and towering redwood trees that have been made famous in countless films about the area (and it’s awe-inspiring to see them up close). The road is smooth, the air smells like pine, and the occasional tree break offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean.

Perched high on Skyline Boulevard, Skeggs Point offers motorcycle riders breathtaking views of Menlo Park and the sprawling suburbs below. The vistas include rolling hills, shimmering rooftops, and endless blue skies.

Get Your Kicks on Route 84

Next, Route 84, also known as La Honda Road, takes you deeper into the San Francisco countryside. La Honda is sometimes known as a “benchmark climb” amongst regular bikers (not motorcyclists) because it measures up against all other peaks. The higher up the peak you go, the chillier it gets, so don’t forget to layer your clothes before you hit the road. 

The Pacific Coast Highway

Eventually, you’ll wind your way down to Highway 1, the world-renowned Pacific Coast Highway. On a clear day, you can see rugged cliffs, crashing waves, and the endless blue of the Pacific for miles. Pull at one of the many viewpoints to snap a photo or simply bask in the awe-inspiring beauty.

Alice’s Restaurant Tour near San Francisco is a relatively safe loop. All roads are well-paved. The terrain varies.

Ride carefully at all times but be especially alert when passing the twisty sections. Traffic can be heavy on weekends and national holidays. Overtaking slow movers is possible, but keep in mind that most of the road is two-lane double yellows.
