Do I Need to Take a Motorcycle Class in Virginia Beach?

Not necessarily. One pathway to getting your Class M designation on your license will require you to take an approved Virginia Rider Training Program. However, you can still get your Class M designation without taking a safety course if you pass a motorcycle knowledge exam and road skills test. 

Even though it is not necessary, it is highly recommended to take a basic safety course, especially if you are new to riding. Safety courses teach the basics of operating a bike on the road, and many organizations offer advanced lessons for more experienced riders. 

HRMST

Hampton Roads Motorcycle Safety Training is an MSF-recognized training facility in Virginia Beach that offers a range of courses for motorcyclists, including introductory ride safety courses and advanced classes. The Basic Safety Course takes two days and includes ten hours of practical riding and five hours of in-class instruction. Basic skills covered in the course include accelerating, braking, U-turns, changing lanes, and shifting gears. Once completed, you will receive a certificate of completion you can use to get your license. 

HRMST currently only offers the Basic Rider course, but they plan to add courses for 3-wheel bikes and courses for dual-front-wheel bikes. HRMST offers four 2-day weekend courses and a single 2-day weekday course. 

PowerRide University

PowerRide University offers courses all over Virginia and Maryland, including Virginia Beach. Participants can choose between four motorcycle courses: A basic 2-wheel riding course, a second-level basic course for more experienced riders, an advanced course for skilled riders, and a course specifically for operating Harley-Davidson motorbikes. PowerRide also offers a 3-wheel basic rider course for those who want to specialize in riding 3-wheel trikes.

Virginia Peninsula Community College 

Virginia Peninsula Community College offers a basic 16-hour motorcycle training course consisting of 11 hours of practical experience and five hours of class instruction. Completing this course will grant you a waiver to add a motorcycle designation to your license. Notably, this course provides students with helmets and bikes to use. Students must have a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit to take the motorcycle course.
