The Tulsa, Oklahoma, motorcycle rally on May 12 and 13, 2023, will take you on a journey back in time through the city’s historic Greenwood District, also known as America’s Black Wall Street.

Tulsa’s Black Wall Street: An American Tragedy

In 1906, a wealthy African-American man named O.W. Gurley moved to Oklahoma and bought over 40 acres of land in Tulsa’s Greenwood District. He later sold the land exclusively to other African-Americans with the intention of creating a thriving and close-knit community.

This is how America’s Black Wall Street was born: a bustling district with doctors’ offices, restaurants, hotels, theaters, nightclubs, and more. Eventually, the area became one of the most prosperous African-American communities in the U.S.

On May 31, 1921, a white mob attacked Greenwood District in what was later called the Tulsa Race Riot — among the worst incidents of racial violence in U.S. history. The mob attacked local residents, homes, and businesses, burning and destroying over 35 square blocks of the neighborhood.
