If you’re looking for a fun route that begins near downtown Boise, we recommend the Boise to Lucky Peak Lookout route. This trip spans just 13 miles, making it an easy there-and-back route to complete in an afternoon during your Boise trip.
You’ll begin the route near Route 21, which will take you out of town along the Boise River. Then, you’ll travel toward Idaho City and eventually make it to the Lucky Peak Reservoir Viewpoint.
We highly recommend stopping at this viewpoint to take photos, enjoy a picnic lunch, or simply appreciate the scenic views of the reservoir. You can also pack fishing supplies if you’d like to try catching a fish in the reservoir.
On the way back to Boise, you can stop at the Yanke Motor Museum to see vintage automobiles, fire engines, pickups, and motorcycles. This is the only automotive museum in Idaho and is the perfect stop for motorcycle enthusiasts.
Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway
Scenic byways offer guaranteed views of the best natural scenery a state has to offer. If you’re looking to traverse one of the most beautiful scenic byways in Idaho, we recommend the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway, also known as Highway 21.
This byway spans from Boise to the Salmon-Challis National Forest, covering 131 miles. You can travel the entire byway during a day trip or turn back once you reach Boise National Forest, which is about a 40-minute drive from downtown Boise.
Once you head out on this scenic byway, you’ll continue into Idaho City and a fun Old West Town. You can stop at this historic town and search for gold in a streambed or stop by the saloon for a drink before continuing your journey.

The Sawtooth National Forest Sun Valley Loop begins in Boise and travels northeast on the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway before turning south on Route 75. On this route, you’ll pass through the Boise National Forest and the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.
This loop will also take you through Sun Valley and Ketchum, resort cities in Blaine County, Idaho. Numerous celebrities have vacation homes in Sun Valley, such as Tom Hanks, Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffett, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Finally, you can loop back northwest and end in Boise. This loop covers around 333 miles and will take approximately six and a half hours without stopping. We recommend dedicating an entire day to traveling this loop on your bike, stopping at the various attractions throughout, and soaking in the beauty of the Idaho landscape.
