Discover Scenic Island Park, Idaho, on Motorcycle

Motorcycle ride in Island Park, Idaho

You may know Island Park, Idaho, for its proximity to Yellowstone National Park, but did you know that the area is also a prime destination for off-road motorcycling?

The nearby RedRock RV Park is one of America’s most isolated and stunning wildlife refuges, a high-rated RV park with 155 full-hookup RV sites, and a starting point for several scenic off-road motorcycle trails at varying levels of difficulty.

The park is just 22 miles from Yellowstone National Park’s West Entrance and offers various amenities, including a retail store, a playground, individual fire pits, and pickleball courts.

Read on to discover some of Idaho’s most scenic off-road motorcycle trails.

Henry’s Lake South Access Trail

This short trail is ideal for when you want to squeeze in a quick off-road session between other activities. The five-mile stretch starts at the south shore of Henry’s Lake and takes you to the top of the nearby Black Mountain. From the summit, you can enjoy the gorgeous views of the lake and the beautiful backcountry of three states: Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming.

Big Springs Trail

The Big Springs trail is suitable for any vehicle. The trail takes you to Big Springs — just over 10 miles from Island Park, Idaho — where the Henry’s Fork of Snake River springs out of the ground. Fishing isn’t allowed, but watching the large fish in the crystal-clear water under the bridge can be entertaining.

Gravelly Ridge Tour

If you want a more challenging trail, this one is it. The 140-mile Gravelly Ridge tour should take you a full day to complete, so make sure to get an early start. The first leg of the trail runs along Madison River before turning west into Gravelly Range, where you’ll enjoy an abundance of wildflowers and wildlife.

Keep in mind that this trail is as wild as they get. There are no commercial facilities along the way, so pack extra food, water, and fuel. Also, note that this trail does not open until July 4.

Sawtelle Peak

Want to feel on top of the world? This off-road trip to Sawtelle Peak can help. The trail will take you up 10,000 feet in elevation, treating you to an abundance of jaw-dropping views of Yellowstone, Madison Range, Henry’s Lake, the Tetons, and Red Rock Lakes Wildlife Refuge.

Two Top Mountain Trail

This 14-mile trail winds along the Yellowstone Plateau on the Idaho-Wyoming state border. You’ll ascend up a canyon before descending into a bowl behind Two Top Mountain. Make sure not to miss the highlight of the trail: the beaver ponds in Tygee Creek!

Elk Lake Trail

Elk Lake Trail makes a longer trip — if you cover the whole distance, it’s a 44-mile round journey. It also takes you out of Idaho to the beautiful Elk Lake in Montana.

On the way there, you’ll pass Red Rock Pass, Hell-Roaring Creek, which is the source of the Missouri River, and Red Rock Creek. You’ll then venture into Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge before turning to Elk Lake.

If you plan accordingly and get there early, you can have lunch at Elk Lake Lodge between noon and 1pm only. The food is delicious!
