Mt. Hood is only 90 miles from Portland, Oregon, but the ride takes time. You should plan on at least 2.5 hours each way. There are plenty of reasons to stop along the route.
There are two routes from Portland to the byway. The first option is to take Interstate 84 to Highway 35 South. This route takes you through the Columbia River Gorge. The second option is to take Highway 26 right from downtown Portland. This route is substantially quicker but bypasses the Columbia River Gorge, if you choose this route both ways. Highways 35 and 29 together constitute the byway.
Interstate 84 to Highway 35
This route takes you through the heart of the Columbia River Gorge. The gorge is replete with natural beauty.
First, you will pass by Multnomah Falls, a waterfall with a 611-foot drop. Next, you can stop at Rowena Crest. It is only a short hike to a lookout plateau with unparalleled views of the gorge.
Ride on to Hood River, where you can pick up Highway 35 toward Mt. Hood. This is a fantastic location to grab lunch and explore the town and river. You may see windsurfers circling far above your head on a windy day.
As you ride down Highway 35, you have officially started the first half of the scenic byway. Mt. Hood expands before your eyes, growing larger with each rotation of your wheels. You can stop to observe the Tamanawas Falls and take a hike.
Further on, you will approach Trillium Lake. Picturesque meadows surround the lake. One of its most intriguing features is that the lake creates a mirror reflection of the mighty mountain on its surface.
Highway 26
Highway 26 is the second half of the Portland to Mt. Hood Loop in Oregon. Together, with Highway 35, it forms the scenic byway around Mt. Hood.
Highway 26 will take you to an elevation above 6,000 feet as you pass the aptly named Timberline Lodge. The lodge dates back to 1937 and is a National Historic Landmark. Spend time exploring the lodge, trails, and views of Mt. Hood before heading back to Portland.
