Getting Your Minnesota Motorcycle License

If you’re seeking the thrill of a motorcycle ride in Minnesota, you’ll have to start by obtaining your Minnesota motorcycle license. Minnesota’s licensing process includes obtaining a learner’s permit, completing a rider training course, and passing both written and skills tests. Check out this comprehensive overview of how to get your Minnesota motorcycle license to help you prepare effectively and comply with all legal requirements.

Steps to Get a Minnesota Motorcycle License or Endorsement

Minnesota motorcyclists must comply with the following licensing steps:

1. Obtain a Motorcycle Instruction Permit

You have to meet the following criteria to obtain a motorcycle instruction permit:

  • You must be at least 16 years old.
  • You need a valid Minnesota driver’s license.
  • You must pass a motorcycle knowledge test at a driver exam station. Those under 18 need a certificate from a state-approved rider training course.
  • You have to pay the $29 permit fee.

You’ll receive a one-year permit that allows you to practice riding on public roads with restrictions (including no passengers and no night riding).

2. Practice Riding

With your instruction permit, practice riding your motorcycle to become familiar with its controls and handling. Adhere to the restrictions mentioned above to ensure safe practice sessions.

3. Complete a Rider Training Course (If Required)

If you are under 18, you must complete the Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center (MMSC) Basic Rider Course (BRC). This course provides valuable hands-on experience and helps you develop essential riding skills. The course is recommended for riders over 18 to help them develop safe riding habits. Adult riders who pass a Basic Rider Course can waive the riding skills test.

4. Schedule and Take the Skills Test

You need to pass a skills test or take a Basic Rider Course to advance from an instruction permit to a full motorcycle endorsement. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Schedule the Test – You can schedule your skills test online, by phone, or in person at a driver exam station.
  • Prepare Your Motorcycle – Ensure your motorcycle is properly equipped, registered, and insured, and bring proof of insurance and registration to the test.
  • Bring Necessary Documents – Bring your current driver’s license, motorcycle instruction permit, and, if you are under 18, a certificate of completion from a rider training course.
  • Wear Proper Gear – You must wear a DOT-approved helmet and eye protection during the test.

5. Obtain Your Motorcycle Endorsement

After passing the skills test, apply for a new driver’s license with your motorcycle endorsement added. The receipt from your new license application will allow you to ride your motorcycle without restrictions until you receive your new license.

6. Endorsement Renewal

When your driver’s license expires, you must also renew your motorcycle endorsement. In addition to the standard renewal fee, you must pay a $17 motorcycle endorsement fee.
