There’s no shortage of long, smooth roads (and freeways) in Houston, but we can think of more fun paths to take than the congested freeways and the Beltway 8.
If you’re looking to take the scenic route, we encourage you to explore our six favorite motorcycle rides in the Houston area.
1. Sam Houston National Forest Trails
For a mere $5, motorcycles (including dirt bikes) can traverse through 85 miles of lush forest trails at Sam Houston National Park. As long as your bike is street legal, it’s welcome to the designated trails. There are some truly beautiful creek crossings, and the terrain varies between sand, mud, and hard pack.
The trails are open year-round, but they do close during extreme weather, so make sure you check their website or call ahead if you’re traveling far.
2. Galveston Seawall
Get out of the hustle and bustle of the city and take I-45 to Galveston Island. Granted, the I-45 is no picnic (especially during rush hour, which seems to extend all day long), but once you’re outside the city limits, you’re in for a treat.
You’d never guess that Houston was so close to the ocean. It’s about 50 miles from the city limit to the Gulf Coast, and there’s nothing better than breathing in a fresh sea breeze on a sunny day.
To make a full circle, drive along the Galveston Seawall until you get to County Road 227. You’ll go through the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge and back toward the city.
3. The Woodlands Back Stretch
If you don’t want to make a full day of it, stick close to home and head just outside of Houston to the Woodlands Back Stretch route.
It’s an easy and relaxing ride on a smooth surface, so it’s ideal for novice riders getting used to longer rides. The round trip is about 30 miles. Hit the mall afterward or check out a show at the amphitheater.
4. The Three Sisters, aka “Twisted Sisters”
Though technically far outside of Houston (the route starts 100 miles northwest of San Antonio), Three Sisters is a route that’s well worth leaving your comfort zone. Bikers compare it to riding a rollercoaster, and that sounds like pure fun and adrenaline.
It’s best for experienced riders due to the ubiquitous twists and turns along the way, and nothing compares to the panoramic view you’ll get of rustic Texas. Extend your trip by making frequent stops to smell the roses. There’s a motorcycle museum that is a definite must-see.
5. Good Ol’ Texas Loop
No list of motorcycle rides in Houston would be complete without mentioning this loop. It’s a meandering journey of about 150 miles that can only be described as “pleasant” thanks to an idyllic view of wildflowers, oak hills, and a collection of lakes and babbling brooks.
Stop at a café to empty your bladder and refuel before heading home. If the flowers are in bloom, you might even be tempted to pull over for a selfie.
6. Willow City Loop
Last but not least is a route that’s west of Texas in Fredericksburg. If you ever find yourself in this area, this loop should top your bucket list of rides. As the name suggests, the road starts in the tiny 400-person town of Willow City.
Some riders rave about the wildflowers, and others prefer to stop in at one of the motorcycle bars. We recommend checking both the blooms and the booze (responsibly, of course).
As you travel this 20-mile route, be on the lookout for cattle and rubbernecking motorists.
Take the Scenic Route
Exploring the 4.19 million miles of roads in the United States will take multiple lifetimes, but you can probably put a decent dent in the roads around Houston. As you enjoy the open road, you can be confident knowing that the team at Law Tigers is on your side.
