Before joining thousands of other registered motorcyclists, you’ll need to get a motorcycle license and a Louisiana motorcycle endorsement. It might seem like a complicated process for first-timers, but it’s not. Get your Louisiana motorcycle license by following these simple steps.
The OMV Appointment
If this is your first time getting a motorcycle endorsement, this step doesn’t apply. Those with an endorsement should schedule an appointment with the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). This is essential if you already have:
- A valid driver’s license
- A motorcycle endorsement from a state other than Louisiana
You won’t need to take a knowledge exam, training course, or road test if you have one or both of the above documentation. However, you’ll want to bring the following items to get your Louisiana license and endorsement:
- Valid driver’s license
- Proof of motorcycle insurance
- Social Security number
- Official driving record
The Motorcycle Knowledge Exam
Before you get your motorcycle endorsement, you must pass a knowledge exam. This is a written test containing 25 multiple-choice questions to assess your knowledge of Louisiana road signs and traffic laws. You’ll successfully pass if you score no less than 80%.

The final step to obtaining your motorcycle endorsement is the official application. Once you pass the knowledge and on-cycle tests or complete an approved training course, you may schedule an appointment with the Louisiana OMV. Don’t forget to bring these with you:
