If you’re a motorcycle owner in Utah, registering your bike is a critical task that keeps you on the right side of the law. The process might seem daunting, especially if you’re new to the state, but with the right information, it’s manageable. From providing proof of ownership to ensuring your bike meets inspection requirements, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to get your motorcycle legally registered in Utah.
Steps to Register a Motorcycle in Utah
Registering a motorcycle in Utah involves several key steps to ensure your bike is legally on the road. Whether you’ve purchased a new motorcycle or brought one in from another state, following these steps will help you complete the process smoothly.
Title Your Motorcycle:
- Complete the Utah Title and Registration Application (Form TC-656).
- Provide the existing title if you’re transferring from another state.
- Obtain a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) inspection if you are titling a motorcycle in Utah for the first time.
Meet Registration Requirements:
- If required, obtain a Utah safety inspection certificate (mostly for specific vehicle types like street-legal ATVs or rebuilt salvage vehicles).
- Pay the age-based uniform fee and applicable registration fees.
Register Your Motorcycle:
- Visit a Utah DMV office with all required documentation (driver’s license, Title and Registration Application, proof of residency, bill of sale if you are making payments on your motorcycle, etc.).
- Pay the registration fees, which are due at the initial registration and annually thereafter.
Special Considerations:
- New Utah residents have 60 days to transfer their title and registration.
- Non-residents operating their motorcycles in Utah may be exempt from registration if they meet specific conditions.
How to Register a Motorcycle Without a Title
Registering a motorcycle without a title in Utah is nearly identical to the standard registration process. But if your lender has the title to your vehicle, you must provide some other type of documentation to prove your motorcycle belongs to you. A bill of sale or similar document from the dealer should work.
How Much Does It Cost to Register a Motorcycle?
There are two types of fees you must pay to register a motorcycle in Utah. The first type is the uniform fee, which depends on how old your motorcycle is. At the low end, the uniform fee for a motorcycle that’s 12 years old or older is $10, while the fee for a bike that’s less than 3 years old is $95.
Per the Utah Code, the current registration fee for a motorcycle is $46. However, these fees can change, so contact a local DMV office before you visit to get the most up-to-date information.
How Long to Register a New Motorcycle?
Since motorcycles don’t have to undergo emissions tests in Utah, the registration process is fairly simple. Unless you need a safety inspection (which only applies to rebuilt salvage motorcycles), you can complete your registration in a single trip to the DMV if you have the required documents and pay the necessary fees.
