The Route to the State Park
The state park isn’t much of a detour if you’re traveling clockwise along the Southern Illinois Loop. Head south on State Route 1 (also known as the Ohio River Scenic Byway) toward the Illinois-Kentucky border. Before you cross the Ohio River, you’ll see signs directing you to Cave-In-Rock State Park.
Are you planning to travel counterclockwise along the southern Illinois motorcycle ride? Head east along Illinois Highway 146 until you reach Loves Corner, IL, to get to the park. Then turn right onto Rt.1/Ohio River Scenic Byway, and you’ll arrive at the state park shortly.
About Cave-In-Rock State Park
Cave-In-Rock is a remarkable natural structure with a unique story to tell. Local legends connect this awe-inspiring rock formation to river pirates and outlaws from the 1700s and 1800s. Although no historical evidence exists to confirm or deny these claims, it certainly adds to the mystery and allure of the state park.
During the mid-1800s, pioneers traveling by boat down the Ohio River would typically stop at Cave-In-Rock for shelter and relaxation. Boaters would chart a course for this unmistakable landmark and use it almost like a tourist attraction. Soon, Cave-In-Rock appeared on maps from that time period.
In 1929, the state of Illinois acquired the famous landmark and turned it into a state park. You can now visit it and explore the historic location, getting a glimpse into America’s rich history and experiencing the legend for yourself.
