Motorcycle Safety Course Utah

Motorcycle safety course

It’s a safe assumption that getting training or taking a course will make you better at something, and that includes riding motorcycles. In a survey of motorcycle accidents, it turns out that 92% of the riders learned to ride by teaching themselves or learned from a friend or family member.

Taking a motorcycle safety course can potentially save your life. If you’re in Utah, we’ve compiled a list of five safety courses to consider taking. We’ve included options for all levels because even experienced riders can use a refresher from time to time.

Benefits of Taking a Motorcycle Safety

It’s worth it to carve a few hours out of your Saturday to learn about motorcycle safety and hone your riding skills. Consider these benefits of taking a safety course:

–   Become a better rider. Enhancing your skills can save your life.

–   Improve your mindset. You’ll learn how to handle a variety of situations and be prepared for anything.

–   Save money. You could get a discount on your insurance by taking a course.

–   Be part of a community. You’ll meet other riders and could even be grouped with others at your experience level.

Whether you’re brand-new to riding or you’re an experienced veteran, we’ve included a list of recommended safety courses that will boost your skills and confidence on the open road.

1. Harley Davidson Riding Academy

This course combines classroom learning with hands-on training. After 25 hours of guidance by riding experts, you’ll get an MSF Basic Rider Course Completion Card, which can waive the riding test at the DMV and get you a substantial discount on motorcycle insurance.

At just $300, this course is a bargain. Sign up here.

2. Salt Lake Community College Beginning Rider Course

Learn the fundamentals before you hit the open road with this community college course. You’ll cut down on classroom instruction time by completing an online portion before your hands-on class.

The best part? If you don’t have a motorcycle yet, no problem. The school will allow you to borrow one of theirs. You’ll also get detailed step-by-step instructions for safety checks and tips on choosing the right protective gear.

Classes are available every week. Check availability and sign up here.

3. Dixie State University Basic Rider Course

Designed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, this course covers all the fundamentals and will give beginner riders the confidence and skills to ride safely.

Like the course offered by Salt Lake Community College, there’s an online portion that needs to be completed before you can attend the live workshop. You’ll also need to have either a learner’s permit or a driver’s license. What you don’t need is a helmet or bike. They’re provided for you.

These classes are offered regularly, but they fill up fast. You can sign up or join the waitlist here.

4. Experienced Rider Course

If you’ve got experience, you don’t need to sit with a bunch of beginners going over things you already know down pat. However, a refresher can always help, and the Experience Rider Course by Utah Rider Ed will help. You’ll get hands-on training, and you can even bring your passenger.

Requirements include having at least 1,000 miles of riding experience, a valid permit or license, and your own bike.

Courses are available both during the week and on weekends. Learn more and sign up here.

5. Private Training

If you prefer to get one-on-one training, Utah Rider Ed also offers private instruction. These courses include a three-hour online course combined with about six to seven hours of riding time. If you don’t have your own bike or helmet, one will be provided to you.

If you want to partner up or take the class with a group of friends, that’s also an option. Learn more or book a class here.
