She’s Ready! Helping Your Wife Choose Her First Motorcycle

If you’re a married motorcyclist, you’ve probably spent at least a small amount of time trying to convince your partner to take up motorcycling with you. For many men, these efforts are futile. However, a lucky few eventually hear these words from their spouses: “I’m ready to get my first motorcycle.”

Helping your wife or partner choose their first motorcycle is a big task. Thankfully, with a little bit of research and planning, you can give your partner all the information they need to make an informed decision.

Read on to learn our tips to select the first motorcycle for the woman in your life.

Tip 1: Focus Less On Her Gender And More On Her Specific Needs

If you’re like many men, your first instinct when searching for a motorcycle for your wife may be to research “motorcycles for women.” In reality, no motorcycles are designed for women, the same way no motorcycles are designed for men. Instead, some bikes simply tend to work better for certain body types and needs.

Rather than searching for a female motorcycle or a bike for women, we recommend helping your wife look for a bike that suits her size and comfort level.

Tip 2: Consider Your Budget

Everyone’s motorcycle budget looks different. Whether yours is on the low or high end of the spectrum, we recommend at least considering how much you’d like to spend before jumping into a new motorcycle purchase.

You and your wife can talk about how serious she is about motorcycling. Is she looking to make biking a permanent hobby? Or is riding something she wants to try for a time to see how she likes it? These questions can also shape your budget.

Tip 3: Show Her Different Bike Styles

If you’re an avid biker, you’re probably familiar with the different styles of motorcycles available on the market today. However, many people outside the biker community don’t realize the sheer number of bike types.

If your wife is one of these people, you can help guide her decision by introducing her to the following styles of motorcycles:

  • Cruiser
  • Classic
  • Sportsbike
  • Naked bike
  • Scooter

Understanding these types can help her narrow her decision.

Tip 4: Invite Her To Sit On and Test-Drive Bikes She’s Interested In

Feeling comfortable on a motorcycle is essential to your safety while riding. If the bike is too big or too small for you, you risk being unable to navigate effectively, and one wrong move can send you into a crash.

As a result, inviting your wife to test-drive motorcycles is essential to helping her find the best fit. The bike she chooses should have the following features:

  • Be the perfect height that she can put her feet flat on the ground while the bike is parked
  • Have handlebars at a comfortable height that allow her to turn the bike smoothly
  • Be lightweight enough that it won’t topple over easily
  • Have an engine size that she feels comfortable controlling

Test-driving a few bikes with these considerations in mind can help your wife narrow her options and streamline the rest of her search process.

Tip 5: Give her Freedom Over Her Bike Purchase

Once you’ve helped your wife choose her favorite type of bike and understand the important features to look for in a motorcycle, be sure to let her make the final decision.

You may be tempted to influence her choice because you know more about motorcycling than she does. However, if you want her to enjoy the hobby, you’ll need to let her have freedom with it.
