Start in San Antonio to Tour the Wine Hill Country in Texas

The Wine Hill Country in Texas

Texas may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of wine. And yet, the Lone Star State has much to offer wine lovers. The Texas Hill Country, particularly the San Antonio area, produces some of the finest wines in North America.

You don’t have to take our word for it. Hop on your motorcycle and ride to the Hill Country to sip on some of these award-winning elixirs yourself. After your San Antonio wine tour, don’t forget to take a bottle (or two!) home.

Of course, Law Tigers encourages you to always drink responsibly and never ride/drive intoxicated.

About the Texas Hill Country

The Hill Country is home to over 50 wineries — more than enough for your wine-tasting bike trip. You can opt for a guided tour package or create your own itinerary. Either way, be sure to set aside a few hours to explore the local countryside. The rolling hills, the quiet little towns, and the beautiful Pedernales River will make a gorgeous backdrop for your San Antonio wine tour.

Three Texas Hill Country Wineries Not to Miss

It’s hard to choose just three local wineries, but we have curated the following list of standouts:

Texas Heritage Vineyard – Fredericksburg, TX

In 2015, Billy and Susan Johnson planted a small vineyard near Fredericksburg. Seven years, a lot of hard work, and many successes later, the estate features a tasting room with décor inspired by Texan music and a covered patio overlooking the countryside.

Texas Heritage Vineyard snatched the gold medal at the 2020 San Antonio Stock Show, and its 2017 Tempranillo was a Rock & Vine Featured Wine. It makes for a phenomenal combo with BBQ or Tex-Mex.

Duchman Family Winery – Driftwood, TX

Wine experts and aficionados rank the Duchman Family Winery as one of the premier wine destinations in Texas, and with good reason. Winemaker Dave Reilly’s magic touch is responsible for some amazing Dolcetto, Vermentino, and Sangiovese wines—all made with Texas-grown grapes.

The Duchman Family Winery is also one of the most beautiful wineries not just in Texas but in all of the United States. The estate sits in the heart of the Hill Country, encircled by sprawling vineyards and romantic gardens.

Saint Tryphon Farm & Vineyards – Boerne, TX

This boutique, family-owned establishment is a winery with a mission. The team behind Saint Tryphon Farm & Vineyards is renowned in the area for protecting local winemakers, gardens, and birds.

In line with its ethos, Saint Tryphon Farm & Vineyards uses only local grapes in its varietals, so you’ll be sipping on 100 percent real Texas wine if you go there. Be sure to try the St. Tryphon Muscat Petnat, a dry sparkling wine with lavender and citrus peel notes.

Turtle Creek Vineyard – Kerrville, TX

Dan and Sue had dreamed of running a vineyard since a 2013 trip to Tuscany, a renowned wine region in Italy. Three years later, they founded Turtle Creek Vineyard and its sister company, Turtle Creek Olives and Vines.

Both businesses aim to promote ethical winemaking practices and support agriculture and tourism in their home of Kerr County, making them superb additions to a San Antonio wine tour for those with a little extra time.
