A major city like Chicago has many motorcycle classes to choose from. However, if you want to skip the written and on-road driving tests to get your Illinois motorcycle license, you must take a state-run course. Only state-run courses allow you to skip the written and on-road tests (if you’re 18 or older; riders ages 16 or 17 must still complete the tests). Here are the three motorcycle riding classes in Chicago that the state offers:
Basic Rider Course
The Basic Rider Course (BRC) is a comprehensive introduction to motorcycle riding, designed to help beginner riders develop the fundamental skills to operate a motorcycle safely. Over approximately 20 hours, students will focus on essential riding techniques such as straight-line riding, turning, shifting, and stopping. As the course progresses, riders will advance to more complex skills like swerving and advanced braking. The course also covers crucial mental strategies for street riding, helping students prepare for real-world scenarios. It’s an ideal starting point for beginners or those looking to build a solid foundation in motorcycle safety.
Basic Rider Course 2
The Basic Rider Course 2 (BRC2) is tailored for riders with some experience who want to refresh and refine their skills. This 10-hour course is perfect for those returning to motorcycling or looking to sharpen their riding techniques. The BRC2 revisits the fundamentals of safe motorcycling while offering a deeper dive into more advanced riding skills. Riders will practice under the guidance of skilled instructors, ensuring they gain the confidence needed to handle their bikes safely on the road. The course concludes with a written and riding evaluation.
Advanced Rider Course
The Advanced Rider Course (ARC) is designed for experienced motorcyclists looking to take their skills to the next level. In this 8.5-hour course, riders will dive into topics like motorcycle dynamics, emergency braking, and traction management. The ARC provides a controlled environment where participants can practice precise steering techniques and correct braking methods. With guidance from Motorcycle Safety Foundation-certified instructors, riders will gain the tools they need for continued safe riding and further skill development on the road.
Where To Take Motorcycle Riding Classes in Chicago
There are about a dozen locations in the Chicagoland area where you can take a state-run motorcycle riding class. All courses are free for Illinois residents 16 or older, and this map contains a list of class locations. However, it’s a good idea to check the available information before committing to a class. As of August 2024, the state needs to select a new regional training center for the Chicago metro area before classes will resume. In the meantime, look for available classes in other parts of the state.
