Fifteen minutes from the city, Red Rock Canyon offers 13 miles of riding on SR-159 through red sandstone formations. This popular tourist attraction gets busy on weekends, so watch for tourists and law enforcement if visiting during peak times.
Mt. Charleston
Head north from the city on U.S. 95, then take SR-157 to Mt. Charleston. Grab a bite at the Mt. Charleston Lodge diner, then head up SR-158 for a beautiful mountain ride. Temperatures can dip 10-20 degrees cooler than in the city. Take the junction for SR-156 back to U.S. 95 to head back to the city after enjoying a day on the mountain.
Plan a trip up the mountain to see the sunset over mountains, forests, and desert, but bring a jacket. The nighttime air can get chilly.
Spring Mountain Ranch State Park
Take SR-159 through Red Rock Canyon on one of the most popular motorcycle rides in the area, and stop at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park on the way through. See popular western reenactments, check out the summer theater, visit the main ranch house for the self-guided tours, or book your visit to schedule a guided tour.
The park offers several historical buildings, trees over 400 years old, and scenic valley views of layered red rock walls, desert, and scrub brush. Road trips to the Spring Mountain Ranch State Park will offer seasonal views of pioneer life at any time of year.
Hoover Dam Loop
The Hoover Dam is only about 45 minutes from Las Vegas, maybe closer to an hour on a busy weekend. The route takes you over the Hoover Dam and around I-11 over the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. Stop at the dam to take any of the available tours or pull over at some of the nearby overlooks to take pictures of the dam and Colorado River below.
A feat of human engineering, the dam is a must-see any time you’re in Vegas. The tours at the dam will offer an inside look into operations for the hydroelectric power stations and the dam’s history. Additionally, the views of the dam from the Tillman Bridge are stunning.
Valley of Fire: Lake Mead Loop
Take SR-167 around the north shore of Lake Mead and follow the signs for the Valley of Fire State Park, the oldest State Park in Nevada. The route offers several places to pull off for a photo opportunity. Visit several park locations to see interesting rock formations and Native American glyphs, and learn more about the area’s history at the Visitor’s Center.
