How To Get Your Louisiana Motorcycle License

How To Get Your Louisiana Motorcycle License

Before joining thousands of other registered motorcyclists, you’ll need to get a motorcycle license and a Louisiana motorcycle endorsement. It might seem like a complicated process for first-timers, but it’s not. Get your Louisiana motorcycle license by following these simple steps.

The OMV Appointment

If this is your first time getting a motorcycle endorsement, this step doesn’t apply. Those with an endorsement should schedule an appointment with the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV). This is essential if you already have:

  • A valid driver’s license
  • A motorcycle endorsement from a state other than Louisiana

You won’t need to take a knowledge exam, training course, or road test if you have one or both of the above documentation. However, you’ll want to bring the following items to get your Louisiana license and endorsement:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proof of motorcycle insurance
  • Social Security number
  • Official driving record

The Motorcycle Knowledge Exam

Before you get your motorcycle endorsement, you must pass a knowledge exam. This is a written test containing 25 multiple-choice questions to assess your knowledge of Louisiana road signs and traffic laws. You’ll successfully pass if you score no less than 80%.

Studying the Motorcycle Operator Manual can help you prepare for the knowledge exam. Free online practice tests are available through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and Louisiana’s OMV.

Here’s what you’ll need to take the motorcycle knowledge exam:

  • An appointment with the OMV
  • A valid driver’s license or photo ID
  • A parent or legal guardian if you’re under 18

The Motorcycle Training Course

Do you want to apply for your Louisiana motorcycle license without taking the written test? Consider taking a motorcycle training course. The Louisiana Department of Public Safety (DPS) offers a Basic Rider Course to exempt you from taking the knowledge exam and on-cycle skills test at the DMV. The course information and registration form is found here.

The Basic Rider Course costs $25 if you own a motorcycle ($100 if you need to borrow a training bike) and takes 15 hours. You’ll learn operating skills, knowledge, and best practices for specific on-road situations. Most people complete the training course over the weekend. Courses are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and fees are non-refundable.

Were you unable to take the DPS Basic Rider Course? Have you passed the knowledge exam and don’t want to take the road skills test? Consider completing an approved training course from one of these providers:

  • Cajun Harley-Davidson
  • Hammond Harley-Davidson
  • New Orleans Harley-Davidson
  • NOLA Riding Academy
  • Taboo Harley-Davidson

The On-cycle Road Skills Test

Are you wondering how to get your Louisiana motorcycle license? You must complete the on-cycle road skills test. This test uses a points system to evaluate your knowledge and skills when riding a motorcycle.

You’ll start with 100 points, but the instructor will deduct points for every driving mistake. You’ll need 80 points or more by the end to pass successfully.

The Motorcycle Endorsement Application

The final step to obtaining your motorcycle endorsement is the official application. Once you pass the knowledge and on-cycle tests or complete an approved training course, you may schedule an appointment with the Louisiana OMV. Don’t forget to bring these with you:

  • A valid driver’s license or photo ID
  • Proof of motorcycle insurance
  • Proof of Louisiana residency
  • A certificate of training course completion
  • A parent or legal guardian if you’re under 18
  • Some form of payment

You’ll have to pass a vision test and pay several fees following your endorsement application. Now, you’re ready to ride!
