Hydrogen Power for Motorcycles?
With the move from internal combustion engines (ICEs) toward electric motors for cars and trucks, you might expect motorcycles to follow suit. However, electric motors aren’t the only green alternatives to traditional gasoline ICEs. What about hydrogen power for motorcycles?
Some motorcycle and other vehicle manufacturers have been experimenting with hydrogen power over the years, and recently, Kawasaki revealed its hydrogen-powered Ninja H2 motorcycle as part of its commitment to become carbon neutral by the 2030s.
Unlike most previous attempts at making hydrogen-powered vehicles, Kawasaki used a hydrogen ICE rather than hydrogen fuel cells. And this choice may be the path forward to a hydrogen-powered future.
While hydrogen-powered motorcycles aren’t on the roads right now, you might not have to wait much longer. This technology exists and is only becoming more viable as industry specialists continue to work with it.
What Are the Benefits of a Hydrogen ICE?
Hydrogen ICEs have various benefits over existing ICE technology and even some of the other green alternatives. The most important benefits include:
- Low Emissions – Compared to gasoline-powered vehicles, hydrogen-powered vehicles emit far lower carbon dioxide levels. The primary byproduct of a hydrogen ICE is water vapor, which doesn’t contribute to poor air quality.
- Cost-Effectiveness – Despite still running on hydrogen, hydrogen ICEs are more cost-effective than hydrogen fuel cells because they use engine technology similar to traditional ICEs. With a hydrogen ICE, there’s no need to “reinvent the wheel” and develop an entirely new type of engine or motor.
- Infrastructure Compatibility – One of the big problems with electric vehicles is finding a place to charge them. While charging ports are becoming commonplace in large cities, they can still be challenging to find in the suburbs and even less populated parts of the country. Existing gasoline pumps can be adapted to distribute hydrogen fuel with minimal modifications, the same way they’re currently used for both gasoline and diesel.
- Same Great Feel – One of the best parts about a hydrogen ICE for riders is that it has the same great feel as a traditional ICE. Electric motors don’t feel the same or produce the same sounds as an ICE. That’s not an issue with a hydrogen ICEl; it’s better for the environment without taking part of the fun out of riding.
Is Hydrogen Power Safe for Motorcycles?
One of the big concerns any time a new technology begins making its way into vehicles is whether it’s safe. In the event of a motorcycle collision, is a hydrogen ICE safe? The answer is yes.
Hydrogen ICEs rely on pressurized hydrogen, which some riders may be wary of. However, these engines undergo the same rigorous testing as traditional ICEs, including crash tests. Hydrogen tanks are designed to hold up even when exposed to heavy impacts and high temperatures.
