Challenges and Opportunities Facing the Motorcycle Industry

Historically, the United States motorcycle market ranks as one of the most stable and consistent in the world. While there are certainly peaks and valleys, there’s some comfort (and trepidation) associated with the understanding that when things are down, they will inevitably go back up – and vice versa. 

Currently, that knowledge is a comfort, albeit a small one, as the nation is currently facing a motorcycle market crisis. In fact, the current downturn is one of the more severe faced in decades and the challenges ahead are significant.

Challenges

Sales have declined year-on-year on a monthly basis, hitting double digit dips from 2024, a year that was viewed as a disappointment in its own right from a sales perspective.

Demand has plummeted as consumers have tightened their belts for a great many reasons, including fears of a recession, the realized, potential, and generally uncertain costs associated with the widespread application of tariffs, and high interest rates.

Compounding this is an ongoing post-pandemic correction. Motorcycle sales boomed for a time when consumers had limited ways in which to spend their disposable income and two-wheeled adventures stood out as one of the ultimate socially-distanced methods of recreation.

To greater and lesser degrees, the manufacturers incorrectly interrupted those high times as the new normal rather than a temporary boost. Production was amped up before the market’s floor fell out (or even simply returned to the pre-pandemic normal), leaving dealerships with a huge excess of unsold inventory.

Even worse, those dealerships are now reporting steeply decreased foot traffic and depressed internet searches and inquiries to back up that boots-on-the-ground evidence. Well over 100 motorcycle dealerships have closed their doors already this year with many more expected to follow.

The post-pandemic fallout has also resulted in a ballooning used market. As a result, second-hand prices have plummeted, stripping buyers of even more incentive to seek out new motorcycles.

Opportunities

While it’s helpful to understand that things will inevitably turn back around, it’s not enough to simply wait for that to happen. Industry stakeholders need to lean into the things that are working in order to help kickstart the comeback.

Here are but a few of the opportunities that are now being capitalized upon with room for further growth:

Women on Two Wheels

The number of female riders has doubled in just over a decade, a trend that only expects to accelerate. Even better for those looking for a spark, women have been shown to invest more time and money in their two-wheeled endeavors than men.

Supporting the growth of women-centric motorcycle clubs and the continued expansion of models that suit their needs and preferences, particularly high-quality and stylish smaller displacement bikes that are also increasingly attractive to beginners and more experienced riders of either sex alike) could pay huge dividends.

Trendsetters

Small displacement sport bikes, adventure bikes, retro and naked bikes, and multi-category families of machines built around low-cost parallel twin-cylinder engine platforms are among the motorcycles currently succeeding in the market.

While a diverse group, all tend to be versatile and practical machines as opposed to hyper-focused and expensive.

Electric Bikes

There remains much curiosity around electric motorcycles even if actual sales numbers are thus far mixed. As the technology continues to improve and gain widespread acceptance, there is massive potential for growth. 

This potential spans demographics, as their performance and ease-of-use advantages should make electric motorcycles alluring to both experts and newcomers.

Safety Advancements

Considerable effort has been made toward improving motorcycle safety. This includes advanced electronic aids, smart helmets that improve situational awareness, car-and-bike linked traffic telemetry, and airbag riding suits, among many others.

Major strides in this area should be expected to be rewarded with increased sales as motorcycling’s many benefits and advantages will shine all the brighter when tied to a lightened counterweight of safety concerns.
