New Wyoming Discovery Motorcycle Route Spans 950 Miles

New Wyoming Discovery Motorcycle Route

Exploring backcountry Wyoming on a motorcycle is every rider’s dream. Pristine landscapes, breathtaking mountains, and historic mining towns make Wyoming a paradise for fans of the American frontier. Now, with the new Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route, riders will have easier access to seldom-visited areas in the Cowboy State.

What Is the WYBDR (Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route)?

Since 2010, Backcountry Discovery Routes (BDR), a non-profit organization supporting off-highway motorcycle travel, established 10 cross-state routes for sport and adventure motorcycle riders. The Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route is BDR’s eleventh project and most remote route to date.

The WYBDR is a 950-mile epic route that takes the daring biker on an unforgettable adventure. Starting at the Colorado border, it winds through Medicine Bow, Alcova, Beaver Rim, and many other off-track locations all the way to Montana. If you’ve always dreamed of an open-sky, middle-of-nowhere riding experience, the WYBDR is for you.

What the Route Offers

Riding through backcountry Wyoming on motorcycle via the WYBDR is a thrilling experience of endless spaces, untouched nature, and diverse wildlife. The WYBDR tracks will take you through stunning landscapes, from densely forested mountains to high desert plains.

You’ll cross the Sierra Madre, Medicine Bow Range, Wind River Range, and the Bighorn Mountains. As you ride, you will probably see various wildlife like deer, moose, wild horses, pronghorn antelope, and many species of birds.

This route will take you around a week, so you’ll need to plan your lodging, food, and fuel stops accordingly. Depending on the weather, you may choose to use the designated camping grounds along the route or stay in one of the hotels or motels listed on the WYBDR page.

It is wise to make reservations ahead of time and carry at least minimal camping gear in case lodgings are unavailable or you get stuck because of weather conditions.

Plan Ahead and Be Prepared

The WYBDR includes rocky stretches, tricky curves, and elevations of up to 11,000 feet. This route features ruts, challenging terrain, and water crossings to test the skills of even the most seasoned riders. To make the most of your ride through the Wyoming Backcountry Discovery Route, you should:

  • Check the weather and terrain conditions. Late spring through the end of September is the optimal time of year to ride the WYBDR. The tallest optional points of the route, Kennaday Peak and Bridger Peak, may only be accessible in the summer.
  • Equip yourself with the proper riding gear, including a helmet, protective goggles, and sturdy biker wear. Riding at alpine elevations, you’ll get cold even in the summer, so pack warm clothes like thermal shirts, a fleece jacket, and a wool cap.
  • Stay on track with maps, a GPS unit, and a compass. Keep in mind that cell phone service is patchy along the route, so you can’t count on having a phone signal in an emergency.
  • Fuel up whenever you can—never pass a gas station on the WYBDR without stopping, since the next one may be many miles ahead.
  • Know your skills and be extra careful during the route’s more challenging spots.
