Take a Ride on the Harley-Davidson Street Glide

Harley Davidson Street Glide

When it comes to understanding which motorcycles riders would most like to take for a spin, few are better positioned than Twisted Road, a company that allows motorcyclists to both rent out their rides and rent the rides of others… sort of an Airbnb for bikes.

A little less than a year back, Twisted Road produced a ranking of its top-rented motorcycles, a list that boasted an impressive range of variety. The list included the likes of the BMW R 1250 GS/R Adventure, Yamaha’s MT-07/09 naked sports machines, the Kawasaki Ninja 400 and Yamaha R3 entry-level sport bikes, along with BMW’s expert-level S 1000 RR, and the muscular Indian Scout Bobber.

Not surprisingly, the list also included a handful of Harley-Davidson models, but one stood above all others: the Harley-Davidson Street Glide.

The rebellious Street Glide is the freedom of the open road made incarnate. This bagger has long been revered for its distinctive roar and sharp lines, starting from its trademark Batwing fairing and going all the way back to the angled tips of its saddlebags.

Now ranking as among the fabled marque’s most iconic and popular models, the Street Glide wasn’t always considered such an obvious runaway success. When the Harley-Davidson FLHX Electra Glide Special was originally unveiled back in 1984, skeptics wondered if it was a bike without a category or a market.

History of the Street Glide

The original Street Glide was initially seen by some as an answer to a question that didn’t exist. Slimmer and stripped down compared to bigger luxury tourers but not enough so to be considered a sport tourer, it was something of a tweener.

But rather than fall through the cracks, the Street Glide revolutionized the game, establishing both a new category and a market to go along with it, while proving attractive to established H-D enthusiasts as well as a younger generation of riders.

Ideally balanced in terms of weight, performance, and comfort, the first Street Glide proved itself a ride equally adept at long hauls and short sprints.

Today the Street Glide is a staple of the Harley-Davidson line-up. As such, it is continually updated and iterated upon with a new version introduced every few years.

Street Glide Engine Progression

While its basic appeal remains unchanged, the bike has steadily grown in engine capacity (incrementally moving from its original air-cooled 1337cc V-Twin to today’s near 2000cc liquid-cooled Milwaukee-Eight 117) and technological innovation – now including Electronic Sequential Port Fuel Injection, multiple pre-programmed ride modes, adjustable suspension, and a 12.3-inch touch screen display, among many other niceties and enhancements.

Whatever changes are made, the aim remains the same – maintaining the perfect balance of power, torque, weight, aggression, and versatility.

As such, it’s not difficult at all to understand why the Harley-Davidson Street Glide ranks as such a popular rental bike. Owners looking to recoup a bit of their not inconsiderable investment see it as a tourer built for multi-day trips. Meanwhile, prospective renters view it as a prime opportunity to sample one of Harley-Davidson’s finest machines and bask in the associated aura.

And it wouldn’t be a complete shock if there’s another category of renter that has emerged in recent years. The runaway success of MotoAmerica’s King of the Bagger series – which has proved so popular that MotoGP recently announced it has teamed up with Harley-Davidson to introduce its own take on the format in 2026 – likely has created a new generation of sport-minded but Bagger-curious riders out there.

What better way to get a taste than by renting one, and what better bike to do so with than the Harley-Davidson Street Glide?
