Top Scenic Motorcycle Rides in Colorado’s Rockies

Colorado ranks among the ultimate destinations for awe-inspiring motorcycle rides. Some of the most stunning vistas and breathtaking routes you’ll find are up in the Rockies and the High Country. These rides not only offer unforgettable views of Colorado’s natural beauty, but they also present formidable challenges to skilled riders.

Million Dollar Highway

Colorado has a rich and fascinating mining history. You can take some of that history in via a winding tour of old mining country on the Million Dollar Highway, which follows the route of an early 1800s toll road. This ride is actually a part of Highway 550.

The 23-mile two-lane highway connects Ouray and Silverton, two historic mining towns established in the 1870s. The space between those towns is filled with 10,000-foot mountain peaks, snaking switchbacks, sheer drop-offs, and fewer guardrails than you might expect. That may sound unsettling, and at times it is, but that’s all part of the adventure—and the unforgettable views are a more-than-worthwhile reward.

Top of the Rockies Scenic & Historic Byway

The Rocky Mountains are one of North America’s most stunning features, and Colorado may be the best place to take them in. The Top of the Rockies Byway covers 115 miles of stunning high elevation views, including the highest point in all of North America: Mt. Elbert. Additionally, you’ll cross the Continental Divide on this trip.

You’ll begin in Aspen and then head west. Early on, you’ll hit Independence Pass, the highest point on the whole route at 12,095 feet. You’ll then have an opportunity to stop off in beautiful Twin Lakes for a closer look at Mt. Elbert.

About halfway through the trip, you’ll reach the highest town in the United States: Leadville. From that point, you can choose between two routes, one that will take you to Minturn and another that winds up in Copper Mountain.

Guanella Pass Scenic Byway

Many Rocky Mountain or High Country rides require you to navigate remote roads in isolated areas. If you prefer something a little closer to civilization that still offers stunning natural vistas, consider Guanella Pass Scenic Byway.

You’ll need to visit the pass between May and October, as it’s typically closed in winter. It begins in Georgetown and takes you on the (extremely) scenic route to Grant. The pass climbs up above 11,600 feet at its highest. You’ll find a ton of great opportunities for pull-offs along the 24-mile way, where you can take some pictures and soak in the scenery.

Trail Ridge Road (Rocky Mountain National Park)

This 48-mile stretch of breathtaking byway is the highest paved road in the United States of America that doesn’t come to a dead end. It takes you from Estes Park to Grand Lake through the awe-inspiring Rocky Mountain National Park. You’ll cross the Continental Divide and rise above the tree line for some stunning views of the legendary mountain range.

Safety Tips for High-Country Motorcycle Riding

These rides may be incredibly rewarding, but they also come with notable risks. Protect yourself by considering the following:

• Respect Altitude: Riding above 10,000 feet puts extra demand on both rider and bike. Monitor your breathing and engine performance carefully throughout your trip.
• Check Road Openings: Many passes close for winter. For example, Independence Pass typically stays open through the summer only. Check openings when planning your ride. For some rides, like the Trail Ridge Road, you must book reservations in advance.
• Stay Prepared: The weather frequently takes sudden turns in these areas. Pack for cold, wind, thunderstorms, and any other potentially disruptive event.
