What Motorcycle Dealerships Are Doing Differently

It’s no secret that motorcycle dealers are facing serious obstacles in 2025, with countless dealerships already closing shop and the remainder stuck in survival mode.

In the midst of a market crisis, the issues plaguing dealers across the nation are numerous with no easy fixes in sight.

Many are loaded up with far too much inventory after misreading the market in what proved to be a temporary pandemic-driven boom. That issue has been made more difficult to rectify due to a steep decline in sales which were down nearly 10% in the first half of ‘25 compared with 2024.

With a combination of factors to blame – ranging from already-high and inflation-boosted prices (which have been further boosted by byzantine tariff fees), an aging demographic, stiffer competition from alternatives – dealers need to be creative and flexible to make ends meet in 2025.

Here are a handful of the strategies dealers are keying in on these days – strategies that just may play to your favor as a potential customer:

Cost Cutting

Obviously dealers need to keep their costs in check to mitigate their revenue struggles. While some of the ways they do so will be invisible to a buyer – or even detrimental to your experience as a buyer, such as reduced staffing – one key way dealers will attempt to do so will be of keen interest to customers: actively and aggressively shedding inventory. Deep Discounts

The only surefire way to move prior year motorcycles currently eating up valuable showroom space is to offer them at prices too good to refuse. Meticulously engineered, sublimely styled, and world-class performing bikes are now readily available for thousands below their MSRP and those deals are only getting better as dealers grow more desperate.

While the dealerships will grudgingly take this short-term hit to ensure their long-term existence, buyers can jump in and take full advantage.

Online Advertising and Digital Sales

Dealerships suffering from low foot traffic have been forced to adopt forward-looking sales strategies by identifying and reaching buyers where they are (and that often means on their phones) rather than sitting and waiting for them to come cruising by.

Effective targeting can expand their base, piquing the interest of potential customers both near and wide.

And while still in its relative infancy and not fully proven, AI-designed, driven, and maintained advertising techniques tease the potential for greater efficiency and lower costs.

Looking Beyond Motorcycle Sales Alone

With motorcycle sales down, motorcycle dealerships have looked to maximize their revenues in regards to the motorcycles that have already been sold.

Service, parts, and accessories are the gift that keeps on giving for a motorcycle dealership that has developed a strong relationship with its existing customer base, and those ‘side missions’ can help keep them afloat through a crisis.

Another more recent trend is emphasizing rentals and leases, side-stepping a number of the concerns that may prevent motorcyclists from otherwise buying a new motorcycle. Eliminating those barriers also helps prime the pump for repeat and potentially lucrative business.

Motorcycle-Adjacent Sales

Motorcycle dealerships have also increasingly leaned into related markets, where their preexisting expertise allows them to readily expand their offerings while tapping into markets that may not be facing the same pressures as motorcycles in 2025.

That includes side-by-sides, scooters, and ebikes.

Another key market is electric motorcycles. While electric vehicles as a whole have seen mixed sales results in recent times, electric motorcycles have bucked the larger trend, boasting a 7% increase in sales year-over-year globally, even as the larger motorcycle market has declined.

While still relatively small, electric motorcycles not only serve as an alternative for existing  motorcyclists, they also have the potential to draw in all-new buyers and reach previously untapped demographics, due to their ease of use and environmental-friendly nature.
