What To Pack for a Motorcycle Trip? Law Tigers Ultimate Guide

group of motorcycle riders

For many, their motorcycle represents freedom – the ability to get out on the open road and just go.

Where? Wherever.

That’s the point.

But as tempting as it may be to “just go,” it’s probably a good idea to check yourself first and make sure you have all your bases covered before you set yourself free.

Gear Up

It’s important to be properly attired whenever you ride, but it’s that much more important when you’re heading out for a long haul.

High-quality and well-maintained gear – from helmet, to jacket, to gloves, to pants, to boots – won’t just help keep you comfortable, it could save your life.

Depending on when and where you ride, you’ll likely want to take potential weather conditions into consideration as well. If there’s a chance of rain or cold, you’ll likely get both. Wet weather gear or heated clothing can make all the difference in trip success or failure.

A Worthy Mount

It’s not just you that has to be up for the ride; your bike needs to be a well-oiled machine too – literally.

Perform a thorough inspection before you leave and perhaps even consider scheduling a precautionary maintenance check with a trusted mechanic. Check your fluids, tire pressure and wear, and all the other basics to make sure you don’t make any rookie mistakes.

And even if in perfectly working order, you might want to make sure your bike is up for the task at hand. Not every type of motorcycle is designed to execute extended trips or capable of providing a comfortable cross-country ride, even if technically possible.

Down Time

Depending on the distance and time involved, you’ll need to consider what you’ll need when not on the bike.

A pair of comfortable shoes, jeans, t-shirts, and sunglasses are a must for even a limited duration adventure. You’ll also likely need your phone and a charger along with basic toiletries.

Also consider how you’ll be spending that down time?

Roughing it? If so, you’re going to need camping gear (tent, sleeping bag, etc.,) as well as a way to prepare hot food (Jetboil is a moto-camping favorite).

Grey Matter Matters

Obviously, you’ll need the right mindset and in multiple respects.

This includes a defensive riding mindset to safely navigate whatever riding conditions and situations you encounter. Lean on your experience, and stay calm, loose, and alert. Don’t ride fatigued, allow your mind to wander excessively, or fall victim to highway hypnosis.

You’ll also be well served to be well prepared. Don’t allow your escape to add stress to your existence. If you’re the type who likes to plan things out – go ahead and map out your route and schedule an agenda. Even if you’d rather play it by ear, you still need to be ready for anything. At the very least, you should take potential road and weather conditions into consideration.

Hydrate and Energize

Pack plenty of water and snacks to keep you going. An easily accessible backpack can be a life saver, and make sure everything is stored properly for when you encounter inclement weather. And you will encounter inclement weather, remember?

Just in Case

Hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Sure, it’s a cliché, but do it anyway.

Bring along a simple tool kit and tire plug kit. Have a flashlight and whatever else you might require to perform minor repairs. Bring an accurate tire gauge so that you can continue your inspections as you travel.

It’s also a good idea to download a .pdf of your bike’s owner’s manual onto your phone to have access to at a moment’s notice, even if you happen to find yourself without a cell connection.
